John Meersma’s Cisco Voice Notes: Part 1

John Meersma, a Cisco Unified Communications Instructor at Sunset Learning Institute, put together a document he uses as a quick reference/study guide in his Cisco VoIP classes.

John found that when studying for an exam, or preparing to teach an upcoming class, it helps tremendously to write down commands and to summarize some important bullet points regarding the topics that he is learning about and memorizing.  Not only does this help him retain the information, it also works great as a reference when he is configuring IOS devices.  Please check back during the upcoming weeks for more of my VoIP notes and commands.  We hope that you will find these tips useful and informative.

Cisco IOS Voice Translations – Part 1: The Basics of Voice Translation Rules

Many of my students find that reading (let alone writing) voice translation rules and profiles in Cisco IOS very confusing. And with good reason – the regular expressions used to build the rules themselves take some getting used to. Add to that the application of a set of those rules to a port, dial-peer, etc. – in a direction of a call’s flow, both inbound and outbound – for called number, calling party and redirect numbers – and that you can use rule sets to manipulate each of those numbers multiple times for a single call, and the whole voice translation process can become overwhelming. (Aspirin anyone?)

This is the first of a series of articles on Cisco IOS Voice Translations. In this part, I’ll cover how to read and write simple regular expressions to construct individual translation rules. Future posts will cover how rule sets and voice translation profiles are built and applied, advanced regular expressions and special applications of voice translation rules, and tools you can use to test what you have built.

Configuring 6VPE, Cisco VPN Provider Edge in MPLS

6VPE can be compared to a regular IPv4 MPLS VPN Provider Edge with the addition of IPv6 support within a VRF.  Providers logically separate routing table entries for VPN member devices.  6VPE can be deployed over an existing IPv4 backbone and does not require modification of the MPLS core routers.

Covered in this video:

  • How to configure a 6VPE on PE Routers
  • Enabling IPv6 Routing and CEF
  • Configuring VRFs
  • Configuring Route Distinguishers and Route Target
  • Configuring VRF Interfaces
  • Configuring BGP
  • Verification Commands of 6VPE

Security Webinar: Stealing the Emperor’s Clothes

The information security industry and market have witnessed an explosion in growth over the last few years. We are constantly learning of new tools, technologies, guidelines, best practices and compliance standards aimed at increasing the security posture of organizations.

In a fairly cruel twist of fate, we are simultaneously witnessing an ever-increasing rate of very publicly reported compromises; some even targeting security companies themselves. In the face of a proliferation of tools, approaches, knowledge and training, defenders are still consistently losing to attackers, who compromise their networks rampantly.

This webinar will provide a brief overview of the flaws that attackers exploit when security is approached from traditional defense-centric mindsets to compromise networks regardless, and will highlight the need for an approach that leverages an understanding of attacker techniques and methodologies to apply appropriate and effective defenses and counter-measures.
